Why I started from scratch
Originally I built a site for my wife and I. She is a make up artist and I’m designer so we are both involved in the arts. At the time it seemed like a great idea for us to both be on the same site, and conveniently it was less work.
Since then I have realized that I needed to separate our sites, more so because Naphtali needed a brand of her own, something that represented her better.
Originally I planned on just keeping the old site for myself. I realized though it might be time for me to rethink my personal brand as well. Not to mention, my coding abilities have grown, and there were lots of new techniques I wanted to try out. The new site is more of a testing ground for newer technologies found through html and css primarily and less of a browser friendly site.
On the old carletoncreative site I wrote frequently at first but it has tapered off. I found it hard to write as often as I felt I should with a blog, and it was annoying to have to come up with images for every post. I enjoy writing but wanted to revamp my approach. There were three goals that I wanted to achieve with a new site:
Write when I can offer something useful.
I have heard that if you want to gain a lot of followers write a lot of content, this may work for some, not for me. If every time I sat down and wrote something it was something worth reading I would write more often, but that’s just not the case. I would rather write once a month on something worth reading, rather than once a day on dribble that will be forgotten, even if it has lots of keywords.
Be more on task.
On previous blogs I have spent more time being concerned about posting frequently, and my content was all over the place. I found it tough to focus. I hope to change this with my approach with articles rather then just blog posts. The idea, articles are more thought out, and on focus with the overall goal of the site. My main focus will be web design and development.
Be more active in the design community.
I admire a lot of people in the industry and I have noticed they have used their sites to engage their followers. I came up with a brilliant idea, I could use twitter. I know its smart isn’t it? Nothing new I know but I would like to see my followers increase and I hope that through the articles I write that will happen.
I am excited to use this section of the site to show problems I have encountered and solved and how I went about it.
